Interesting topic for today… As a sensible computer user should, I backup my systems… a LOT! My client work is separate from my personal work but they both follow the same thought process… MORE is Better!
So I’m an all Apple Shop. My personal computer is a 15″ MBP. It backs up each hour to my Time Capsule and once a week to a separate hard drive via a great little app called Carbon Copy Cloner. Why is this important? Well last week, while at the hospital with Natalie, my beloved MBP fell over and slammed into the floor. OUCH!!! Well the ol’ girl kept on ticking and working great. Then Thursday night about 11 PM I had to reboot due to some hangs in the system.
It didn’t boot back up! Just a blinking file folder with a question mark. The system was not looking good. After some research on the net, I realized my hard drive had been damaged during the fall earlier in the week. It was a bummer, but I knew I had backup’s.
Remember the clone of my hard drive? Well I was able to use it to clone the new Hard drive, after putting it in the system and booting up, I was able to connect to my Time Capsule and restore from the 10PM backup. All data that wasn’t on the clone copy, was quickly restored and the system was back up and running.
So what did we learn? BACKUP YOUR DATA.. 2 or 3 times even. You never know when you’ll need it!
The backup for my clients images is a little more involved and extensive considering I’m storing the only lasting memories for the happiest day of their lives. Never the less, if you don’t backup your system now, START today because after you loose it all, you’ll only wish you had started sooner!
If you are a Window’s user, there is no easy backup process, but I have some help for you! Start by taking your PC to the Apple store and buy a Mac along with the One-on-One service, and a Time Capsule. Have the Mac employees migrate your PC to the new Mac and go home happy! That’s about all I can help you with regarding PC’s.![]()
